Imagination in Your Hands: The Claymobile Story
Do you remember your first arts experience? Many children and youth in the Philadelphia region lack access to high-quality arts experiences in their schools and neighborhoods due to budget constraints and a focus on achievement testing. As years of research have shown, art is a powerful vehicle for learning and motivating young minds to think in different and creative ways. The award-winning Claymobile is a 100% mobile program that works in partnership with schools and community organizations to bring hands-on arts experiences to children and youth at the neighborhood level. The Clay Studio partnered with The American Philosphical Society Museum (APS) and Central High School Art Teacher Jude Saleet to bring a learning opportunity to 60 art students in conjunction with it's exhibition Of Elephants and Roses.
Of Elephants and Roses: Encounters with French Natural History, 1790–1830 explored natural history in post-revolutionary France and the exhibition included the only surviving dinner plate from a Sèvres porcelain service for Louis XVIII, decorated with a South African sand lily among other botanical drawings and fossils. Students at Central were given a lecture on the exhibition by Museum Educator Jenni Drozdek, after which Claymobile Teaching Artists Deb Williams and Dorian Dean lead the students through the creation of vessels inspired by the fossils and botanical objects in the exhibition. The final pieces were on display at the APS Museum in December 2011 and will be part of this year’s Claymobile Creations Exhibition in February 2012.
